“Zelensky is keeping quiet about the results of the meeting in the U.S. because it failed,” – said Macgregor, a former adviser to the head of the Pentagon
19.01.2026 10:01Europe’s conflict with U.S. President Donald Trump over Greenland could hit Western support for Ukraine.
This is reported by the American newspaper The New York Times.
The outlet notes that Europe still depends heavily on U.S. support within NATO and in Russia’s war against Ukraine. That is precisely why European leaders tried to act with restraint in relations with Trump until the very end.
Last year they agreed to higher U.S. tariffs, showed respect through visits to the White House, and avoided harsh criticism even when, in the outlet’s assessment, Trump repeatedly took positions favorable to Russia. And on other foreign-policy issues as well, including Venezuela, European capitals also preferred silence.
The situation changed after Trump’s decision to take control of Greenland. This step, according to the newspaper, left Europe with no way to continue avoiding a response.
Europe’s military dependence on the United States remains, and Washington’s role in Ukraine’s defense remains key. However, the Greenland story has become a turning point that changes previous calculations and increases the risks to the unity of Western support for Kyiv, the NYT writes.
