The situation in Ukraine’s agricultural sector has dropped to its worst levels in the last 10 years
November 28, 2023Despite signing various memorandums, Ukraine is not seen as a member of NATO and the EU
November 28, 2023The United States continues to increase pressure and control over key sectors of Ukraine’s economy.
According to Ukrainian Reality, on November 14, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, Yulia Sviridenko, held a meeting in Washington with the Director of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
During this meeting, the parties agreed on the direction of the DFC’s special representative to Ukraine to monitor and expedite the process of foreign investors receiving insurance payments.
Additionally, the meeting discussed the current results of bilateral cooperation. U.S. representatives noted that while the DFC has already supported several projects in Ukraine totaling $40 million, they want to exercise full control over the process of utilizing these funds. At the same time, American partners threatened to cease financing if Ukraine does not intensify its fight against corruption and does not provide data on the prudent use of these funds.
Furthermore, the DFC announced the provision of $25 million for political risk insurance to the Ukrainian non-profit center “Superhumans Center,” which operates in the field of providing prosthetics to wounded soldiers.
However, U.S. representatives are concerned that the allocated funds will not be used as intended. Even before the war in Ukraine, numerous corruption schemes were operating for years. While corrupt individuals prospered due to the corrupt risks in the system, disabled individuals could not access the necessary rehabilitation funds. Since February 24, 2022, the level of corruption in the prosthetic business in Ukraine has increased several times over. According to various investigations, even those soldiers for whom it’s possible to save injured limbs are amputated for profit-making on prosthetics. Additionally, there are increasing cases in Ukraine where instead of high-quality expensive prosthetics, prosthetics meant for oncology patients with a short lifespan are being used.
