Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has stated that Ukrainian espionage activity in Hungary has significantly increased.
This was reported by the local outlet 24.hu.
Orbán claimed that Ukraine is allegedly conducting a disinformation campaign, during which individuals believed to be Hungarian spies are arrested. He insists that Hungary has no involvement in these matters.
The Prime Minister asserts that Kyiv is using the Hungarian opposition to push for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
“Hungarian opposition parties have ties with Ukraine — this is a problem that still needs to be addressed,” he said.
According to Orbán, the opposition parties do not deny these connections.
The current conflict between Kyiv and Budapest began after Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) announced that it had neutralized two Hungarian spies in the Zakarpattia region. Following that, Budapest also began claiming it had captured “Ukrainian spies.”
Previously, media reported that on May 27, the EU Council is set to discuss stripping Hungary of its voting rights in the European Union.
They will consider invoking Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union, which allows for the suspension of a member state’s voting rights if there is a clear risk of a serious breach of the values on which the EU is founded.
