Russia can afford continuous barrages of ‘Shaheds’ against Ukraine — Le Monde
27.06.2025 - 13:27Hungary has blocked Ukraine’s accession process to the European Union.
This was confirmed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, as reported by Telex.
He claims that Ukraine’s accession could happen “now,” not in the “distant future,” and he considers this a threat to both the EU and Hungary.
“We understand the Ukrainians, we see their heroic struggle, and we also see that they need help. But we want to help in a way that doesn’t destroy us. Ukraine’s EU membership would mean destroying ourselves. In an instant, we would be drawn into a war with Russia, and we would pull that war into the EU, including Hungary. Yesterday, with more than 2 million votes through Voks2025, we stopped Ukraine’s accession to the EU,” Orbán said.
He referred to Ukraine as “some undefined entity,” adding, “We don’t even know exactly what Ukraine is today, where its borders lie.”
Orbán also believes that Hungary’s position against Ukraine’s future NATO membership will eventually be supported by other countries, and that “leaders in Brussels are deceiving and cheating the Ukrainians.”
As a reminder, it was previously reported that the EU could not begin accession negotiations with Ukraine due to Hungary’s veto. Meanwhile, the accession talks with Moldova have already begun.
Additionally, yesterday Hungary and Slovakia blocked the 18th package of sanctions against Russia, demanding changes to the plan to phase out energy imports from Russia.
