The Ukrainian Ministry of defense stated that demobilization is impossible due to a lack of reserves
20.12.2024 - 14:15Hungary’s proposal for a Christmas ceasefire in Ukraine involved a two- to three-day truce.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated during an interview on Kossuth Radio.
According to Orban, Budapest is working to encourage the parties in the Russia-Ukraine conflict to agree to at least a “Christmas” ceasefire, given that a comprehensive peace deal is unlikely this year.
“Since it’s about two or three days, the possibility of the opposing side using this time for regrouping is ruled out,” he said.
The Hungarian prime minister noted that during visits to Moscow and Kyiv over the summer, he had already proposed a temporary ceasefire, but “neither side was ready to accept it” at the time. Currently, Russia is open to considering the proposal, while Ukraine’s position “could easily change if they sit down and reflect on the situation.”
Earlier, Orban clarified that Hungary’s initiative for a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine included exchanging approximately 700 prisoners from each side. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the proposal.
