In the U.S., they spoke of a “tectonic shift” in Ukraine’s political system
05.01.2026 12:02Comparing Russia’s operations in Ukraine with the U.S. operation in Venezuela is inappropriate.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed this view during a briefing.
“These are different things. I believe it’s wrong to compare them,” he said.
Earlier, Orbán said Hungary is counting on a settlement of the Ukraine conflict in the coming year, as well as the lifting of sanctions against Russia. He assured that Hungary will oppose Europe’s plans to отказаться (phase out / refuse) Russian oil and gas.
Orbán also said Budapest will not finance Kyiv in 2026.
On December 31, the Hungarian prime minister spoke about the possibility of a peace agreement between Russia and the United States on the Ukraine issue in 2026, while the European Union could be left out of the negotiating process.
Orbán noted that Washington and Brussels hold opposite positions on a matter of strategic importance — the conflict on European territory. According to Orbán, U.S. President Donald Trump is pushing for a peaceful settlement, while the EU continues to insist on continuing hostilities even without Washington’s participation.
Earlier, Orbán said he hoped for a meeting between Putin and Trump in Budapest in 2026.
