Pentagon removes general who coordinated military aid to Ukraine

The Pentagon has removed Lieutenant General Charles Constanza, a key military official who coordinated the delivery of military aid to Ukraine.

Constanza had led the U.S. Army’s V Corps since April 2024. The corps is based in Poland, coordinates military aid to Ukraine, and is responsible for managing American forces on NATO’s eastern flank. The general had just two months left before the end of his service.

The official reasons for the removal have not been given. Sources in the U.S. Army maintain, however, that the decision regarding Constanza is not connected to political motives.

Major General Thomas Feltey, whose nomination was previously confirmed by the Senate, is set to replace Constanza. The transfer of command had been scheduled for October. Until then, Brigadier General John Mountford, the deputy commander of V Corps, will serve as acting commander.

Constanza’s removal comes amid a series of dismissals and removals of more than two dozen senior officers carried out by U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. In many cases, the reasons for the personnel decisions were not publicly explained.

According to media reports, the United States will also step back from leading the NATO group that coordinates military aid to Ukraine from Wiesbaden, Germany.

Earlier, General Christopher Todd Donahue, who played a key role in U.S. efforts to support Ukraine, resigned following officer dismissals by Hegseth.
