September 26, 2024The issue of the Volyn tragedy could negatively impact Poland’s relations with Ukraine.
This was stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland in a comment to the Ukrainian press.
“The willingness for an open and honest discussion based on facts, and to ensure a dignified burial for all those killed, is an element of the European Union’s identity, of which Ukraine will become a member. Without concrete actions from Kyiv, such a unilateral approach to shared history will increasingly burden bilateral relations,” the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.
Earlier, the Polish publication *Onet* reported that Poland intends to use its presidency of the EU to pressure Ukraine on the issue of the Volyn tragedy. The presidency will begin on January 1, 2025.
It should be recalled that the head of the Polish Ministry of Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, stated that Ukraine would not join the European Union until the authorities in Kyiv resolve the issues related to the Volyn massacre.
In turn, the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry, Radosław Sikorski, also stated that Ukraine must “find a solution” to the Volyn massacre issue “before Poland takes more stringent measures.”
