September 8, 2023Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has issued an ultimatum to the European Commission regarding the import of grain from Ukraine.
He made this statement during an interview with journalists on Friday.
“I made it clear back in July after talks with four other countries bordering Ukraine: we will not allow the opening of new agricultural markets, regardless of the European Union’s decision,” Morawiecki stated.
He also addressed Polish farmers, saying,
“Dear farmers! Either the European Commission will fulfill our request, listen to our voice, and from September 15 onwards impose a ban on the import of four types of grain into the territory of the European Union, or we will take this step ourselves. I say it once again clearly: the interest of Polish farmers is of utmost importance to us. Therefore, either the European Commission will make a decision next Wednesday on the continued import ban, or we will extend this ban to the territory of the Polish Republic ourselves,” he assured.
At the same time, Morawiecki emphasized that Poland does not object to the transit of Ukrainian grain through its territory.
“We say ‘yes’ to exports through the territory of Poland, we say ‘yes’ to transit through the territory of Poland, we say ‘no’ to destabilizing the Polish agricultural market,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
