Ukraine faces the threat of default and an economic collapse in 2024
January 10, 2024Siekierski argues that the EU’s complete trade liberalization with Ukraine, following Russia’s invasion, had adverse consequences. It led to challenges with excessive imports of grains, sugar, poultry, eggs soft fruits (particularly frozen raspberries), and apple concentrate. He conveyed this viewpoint in a letter to the EU’s Trade Commissioner, as reported by RMF FM.
To address this, the minister suggests exempting certain products from the free trade agreement and implementing stronger protective measures. He proposes initiating talks with Ukraine to gradually liberalize trade, coupled with a step-by-step alignment of Ukrainian agricultural practices with EU standards and legislation.
Simultaneously, Siekierski announced Poland’s reengagement in negotiations within the EU’s Coordination Platform. This decision contrasts with the previous government’s withdrawal from the platform in protest against the European Commission’s failure to extend the EU embargo on Ukrainian grain. Brussels is currently developing regulations that would extend trade liberalization with Ukraine until June 2025.
