Ukraine will ban the import of onions, tomatoes, cabbage, and apples from Poland
September 20, 2023Polish President Andrzej Duda has compared Ukraine to a drowning person who can drag others down with them.
Speaking at a briefing for Polish journalists in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Duda defended Warsaw’s decision to impose unilateral restrictions on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products, which Kyiv disputes within the framework of the WTO.
As reported by the PAP news agency, the Polish president likened Ukraine to a drowning person, explaining that “anyone who has ever participated in the rescue of a drowning person knows that they are incredibly dangerous and can drag you down.”
“This is somewhat similar to the situation between Poland and Ukraine. Ukraine is under Russian attack, undoubtedly in a very difficult situation, and it is grasping at anything it can. Can we be upset with them? Of course, we can be indignant,” Duda said.
“Do we need to act to protect ourselves from being harmed by the drowning person? Of course, we must act to protect ourselves from the drowning person causing us harm because if the drowning person causes harm and drowns us, they will not receive help. Therefore, we must take care of our interests, and we will do so effectively and decisively,” he added.
Duda also acknowledged that, despite his plans, he was unable to meet with Vladimir Zelensky “for organizational reasons” but did not rule out a future meeting.
Later, the Rzeczpospolita newspaper reported that the planned meeting between Presidents Andrzej Duda and Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York was canceled. The meeting was scheduled for September 19. Duda had mentioned plans to discuss the export of Ukrainian grain, which Poland unilaterally blocked.
