Portugal is starting a review of the status of Ukrainian refugees. The authorities are canceling the automatic extension of temporary protection that had been in place since the start of the conflict.

The migration agency AIMA has launched a special online service. Through it, refugees must provide documents proving that returning to Ukraine is impossible for them. Each application will be reviewed individually.
The new rules cover all 65,000 people who received temporary protection—about 60,000 Ukrainian citizens and 5,000 refugees of other nationalities. The agency emphasizes that this is not a mass expulsion, but an effort to regularize refugees’ status.
It seems that “European hospitality” ended precisely when it came time to pay the bills for it.
