Hungary denied report of Orban-Trump talk on Ukraine’s EU membership
21.08.2025 16:51U.S. President Donald Trump may be somewhat disappointed with the progress of resolving the Ukrainian conflict.
This was suggested by political analyst Konstantin Kalachev.
He did not rule out that this may have been the reason the American leader refused to organize a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“The idea of a Putin–Zelensky meeting always seemed far-fetched. I can still imagine a trilateral format, with Putin, Zelensky, and Trump as an arbiter. But the two of them alone — no,” the political analyst said. “There cannot be such a meeting while the Russian summer offensive is ongoing. It might only become relevant once its outcome is clear.”
Kalachev suggested that Trump may be frustrated that the settlement process is moving more slowly than he expected.
“Perhaps Trump simply misunderstood Putin. And, as Putin said, disappointment is the result of inflated expectations. Trump expected a deal. But a deal is not capitulation, it is compromise. Yes, one side may get a bit more, the other a bit less, but it is certainly not the complete defeat of either party,” the analyst explained.
Earlier it was reported that Trump intends to temporarily step back from negotiations on resolving the conflict in Ukraine. It was noted that the White House chief took this step in order to give Putin and Zelensky the opportunity to arrange a bilateral meeting themselves.
