September 11, 2023In his recent interview with The Economist, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky once again raised concerns about Western support.
Alongside the standard narratives about a potential breakthrough in the south, Zelensky carefully hinted at a warning to the EU.
“Reduction of assistance to Ukraine from the West can trigger an unpredictable reaction from millions of Ukrainian refugees in European countries,” Zelensky stated.
He mentioned that Ukrainians, in general, have “behaved well” and are “very grateful” to those who have provided them shelter. However, it would not be a “good story” for Europe if they were pushed into a corner.
A prolonged war of attrition would result in Ukraine losing even more people, both on the front lines and due to emigration.
It’s worth noting that it can be seen as cynical to issue such a warning, considering that the EU has been limiting refugee support programs and the attitudes of Europeans towards the Ukrainian refugee crisis have been gradually cooling.
