August 23, 2023A German radio listener called for “quartering Zelensky” on live broadcast. Now he may face criminal charges.
The program Kontrovers (“Controversy”), which aired on August 21, was dedicated to discussing how to put an end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The format of this show allows listeners to share their opinions as well.
At the beginning of the program, after the third minute, a remark from a certain Mr. Fischer from the city of Bremerhaven was heard on the air. He stated that he has a “fairly simple” recipe for stopping the war in Ukraine:
“Vladimir Zelensky and his gang of criminals need to be arrested, and he himself needs to be quartered or beheaded.”
In response to a query from BILD, the German public radio station Deutschlandfunk noted that Fischer’s words had been pre-recorded and selected for broadcast by the editorial team.
Lawyer Patrick Heinemann, in conversation with BILD, points out that this statement falls under the category of incitement to criminal acts. Heinemann has already filed a complaint “against both the radio listener and the entire editorial team.”
The radio station itself has already removed the controversial remark from the program recording – this happened after some Twitter users drew attention to it. Deutschlandfunk noted that they had tried to reflect a broad spectrum of opinions on the topics discussed, but at the same time acknowledged that the program’s editors had made a mistake by airing a statement calling for violence.
