September 29, 2023Most EU foreign ministers, BILD has learned, have agreed to reform asylum within the EU. In particular, this proposal was supported by German Interior Minister Nancy Feser.
Without the consent of the German authorities, achieving a qualified majority would have been impossible. The proposal was rejected only by Poland and Hungary, which in principle are not ready to host refugees.
What do you need to know about the reform?
New rules for refugees, which are going to be accepted in the European Union are designed to sharply reduce the influx of illegal migrants.
▫️Refugees will be weeded out at the external borders of the EU: illegal immigrants from countries whose citizens are less likely to receive the right to remain in the EU in less than 20% of cases will be interned in special camps. In case of refusal, a procedure for prompt deportation is provided for them; in this case, they will not be considered to have entered the EU territory.
▫️The same procedure will be provided for citizens of states that are classified as safe; in them, from the point of view of the EU authorities, human rights are respected. Such countries will most likely include, for example, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, as well as Moldova and Georgia.
▫️Migrants who arrive in the EU in transit through so-called safe states will be deprived of the opportunity to apply for asylum. They will be sent back to the country from which they came.
▫️The period of detention in camps in which the movement of refugees is limited will not exceed six months.
