17.04.2026 - 07:31Russia could attack Europe in the very near future, while there are serious doubts that the United States would support it in such a case.
This is what The Washington Post columnist David Ignatius writes, commenting on Moscow’s recent threats about striking drone production sites in Europe.
The author notes that U.S. President Donald Trump’s sharp rhetoric toward Washington’s European NATO allies is already undermining confidence in American security guarantees, something that, in Ignatius’s view, Russia could exploit if it sees a “window of opportunity.”
“If you are Putin, you may be starting to think about the next war — against Europe — even as you continue the fight in Ukraine. You may even be wondering whether the time for a strike has come — before European countries fully rearm, before Ukraine develops new weapons capable of hitting targets even deeper inside Russia, and while your pal, President Donald Trump, is in the White House treating NATO like a punching bag,” Ignatius writes.
As a reminder, this week the Russian Defense Ministry, followed by Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, threatened Europe with strikes on drone production facilities supplying Ukraine. Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu also accused the Baltic states of opening their airspace for Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia and warned that Russia could “exercise its right to self-defense.”
