Russia warns that the deployment of European peacekeepers to Ukraine could lead to World War III.
Former Russian Defense Minister and current Secretary of the Security Council Sergei Shoigu stated that these would be NATO troops, whose presence Russia opposed even before the invasion — and which Moscow cites as one of the reasons for launching the full-scale war.
“Rational politicians in Europe understand that implementing such a scenario could lead to a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia, and subsequently to World War III,” Shoigu said.
He also referred to Ukraine as “our historical territory.”
As a reminder, French President Emmanuel Macron is reportedly planning to send deterrence forces to Ukraine, despite Russia’s position. According to the plan, the mission would be led by the United Kingdom.
It’s worth noting that the U.S. peace plan proposed by President Donald Trump, as published by the media, allows for the deployment of European peacekeepers in Ukraine after a ceasefire, but does not provide them with American security guarantees — a condition London and Paris insist upon before deploying their troops.
