February 21, 2024Russia may launch anti-satellite nuclear weapons into space as early as this year.
This information was passed on to allies by the United States, as reported by Bloomberg.
Although non-nuclear weapons or simply a dummy warhead may be deployed, a nuclear warhead in orbit would violate the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, to which Russia is a signatory.
It is believed that Russia does not intend to conduct explosions in space, but there is a risk of accidents. A nuclear explosion could potentially affect about a third of satellites and damage Earth’s communication systems.
Putin previously stated that Russia is “absolutely against” the deployment of nuclear weapons in space and only does in space “what other countries, including the United States, do.”
Earlier, CNN reported that Russia is developing weapons capable of disabling “a large number of satellites.” They have recently made progress in developing this technology. According to an unnamed Pentagon official, “a whole stream of intelligence messages” has been received on this matter in recent months.
