09.09.2024 13:18German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is reportedly preparing a peace plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, which could involve allowing Russia to retain control over occupied Ukrainian territories.
This information comes from the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
“Olaf Scholz is working on a peace plan to bring Russia to the negotiating table. It is suggested that Kyiv would accept territorial concessions,” the article states.
According to the report, Scholz aims to go down in history as a “chancellor of peace” and avoid a potential resignation. Scholz is said to be deeply affected by the negative outcomes of recent elections in Thuringia and Saxony, and rumors are swirling that a possible defeat in the September 22 elections in Brandenburg could force him to step down. Consequently, he has decided to focus on the Ukraine issue as a way to improve his political standing.
The article also notes that yesterday Scholz remarked, “The moment has come to discuss how we can more quickly exit this military situation and achieve peace.” Additionally, two days ago, former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk indicated that Kyiv is not opposed to Berlin’s mediation in talks with Moscow.
