February 6, 2025Ukraine’s Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) conducted searches in Kyiv City Hall as part of an investigation into the creation of a criminal organization within the city council. The operation came shortly after Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko criticized President Volodymyr Zelensky’s inner circle.
The agency’s press service reported the investigative actions on Telegram.
“[Investigators] are conducting a large-scale operation to expose a criminal organization involved in land-related corruption within the Kyiv City Council and the Kyiv City Administration,” the statement reads.
On January 29, Klitschko addressed Zelensky in a video message, complaining about the actions of Kyiv City Military Administration head Timur Tkachenko, whom he described as part of the president’s inner circle. According to the mayor, Tkachenko obstructs municipal operations and strips civilian authorities of their powers.
A few days later, Tkachenko fired back, accusing Klitschko of hindering an investigation into shadowy financial schemes in Ukraine’s capital. He claimed that Klitschko’s team was deliberately delaying the formation of a commission to investigate corruption, citing procedural excuses.
