The Ukrainian F-16 may have been shot down by a Patriot air defense system – New York Times
August 31, 2024The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden has declined to send technical personnel to Ukraine for the maintenance of F-16 fighter jets due to safety concerns.
This information was reported by U.S. officials in conversations with The Wall Street Journal.
The U.S. National Security Council considered the proposal to send civilian contractors to Ukraine, but the intelligence community and other agencies deemed it too risky at this time, as Russia could target them.
The publication notes that one F-16 requires dozens of support personnel.
“Without civilian contractors to maintain the aircraft, such as for repairs and parts replacement, Ukraine will struggle to keep the planes provided by the West in operational condition. However, the U.S. is reluctant to send personnel to Ukraine due to safety concerns. A small contingent of diplomats, military personnel, and other government contractors is currently stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv,” the article states.
