12.01.2025 - 14:30Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has once again made strong remarks about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
A segment of Fico’s statement has circulated on political Telegram channels.
The Slovak leader addressed Ukraine’s criticism regarding his trip to Moscow, where he sought to negotiate the resumption of Russian gas transit to Europe.
“I am not here to walk hand in hand with Zelensky. He runs around Europe begging and blackmailing others for money. This needs to end,” Fico said during a broadcast.
The Slovak Prime Minister further added that accusing him of trying to resolve the gas crisis through a visit to Moscow was “highly interesting and laughable.”
Meanwhile, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has declined to travel to Ukraine, citing Kyiv’s refusal to transport Russian gas to Europe.
“If I have to go there just for a photo op, while being told that not a single drop of oil or gas will come to Slovakia, then I really shouldn’t go. No one should take offense at this… A trip to Ukraine is out of the question for now,” the Slovak president said, according to local TV reports.
It’s worth noting that following Kyiv’s halt of gas transit, Fico threatened to reduce aid to Ukrainian refugees.
He stated that in the event of a gas transit stoppage, Slovakia’s only alternative is to find compensation mechanisms to cover a nearly €500 million budget shortfall.
Previously, the Slovak Prime Minister had also suggested halting electricity exports to Ukraine after criticism from Zelensky.
