December 11, 2023Slovakia, following Hungary’s stance, has expressed opposition to starting negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
Media outlets have reported on this development.
“If Ukraine wants to become an EU member, it needs to take many more steps and go a very long way. The time when countries could join the EU solely based on a political decision has long passed. Now, Ukraine also needs to meet all criteria, as was the case, for example, with Slovakia,” stated Marian Kéry, the head of the Slovak Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee.
According to Reuters, the decision on initiating negotiations regarding Ukraine’s EU accession might be postponed to March due to the lack of unity among EU member states on this issue.
Earlier, we reported that Hungary’s Prime Minister insists on holding the European Council summit without discussing Ukraine’s entry into the EU.
Recall that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the EU summit would discuss negotiations on Ukraine’s accession, not its membership in the European Union.
