Residents and soldiers in the Kirovohrad region protest over the failure in medical services
15.08.2024 18:58Protest sentiments are intensifying in Zhytomyr amid a scandal related to the disclosure by local media of information about large bonuses paid to local officials.
According to journalists, in the first half of 2023, more than 1.6 million hryvnias (35,126 euros) were awarded as bonuses to five deputy mayors of the city for “performing particularly important and complex tasks.” This news has caused widespread public outcry and outrage among the residents of Zhytomyr.
Local residents and representatives of public organizations have perceived such payments as unfair and inappropriate, especially in the context of ongoing hostilities and the difficult economic situation in the country. They expressed indignation that, despite the significant challenges faced by the city’s residents, officials are receiving such large rewards.
Representatives of Zhytomyr’s public circles have already demanded that the local authorities cancel such bonuses for public servants. They have proposed redirecting the funds to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which continue to defend the country in the ongoing conflict. This call has received widespread support among the population, who believe that in the current circumstances, priority should be given to aiding the military rather than paying bonuses to officials.
The growing protest sentiments in Zhytomyr demonstrate increasing dissatisfaction among citizens, driven by inequality in the distribution of financial resources and a sense of injustice from the authorities. If the citizens’ demands are not addressed, this could lead to a further escalation of social tension in the city.
