September 14, 2023Despite the fact that Fedor Venislavsky’s bill, which restricts students’ right to defer military conscription, has not yet been passed, territorial recruitment centers have already stopped approving deferments for students who will fall under this document if it is adopted.
Such a precedent was reported by Elena Ovdiyuk, an associate professor at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko University, on her Facebook page.
According to her, the Zhytomyr Territorial Recruitment Center denied a deferment from military conscription to a full-time master’s degree student at a local university, citing Venislavsky’s project. The student was handed a summons and sent for a medical examination.
In the comments to Elena Ovdiyuk’s post, other representatives of the educational community write that this is not an isolated case.
“Students aged 30+ came to the military enlistment office to update their documents (exchange the conscription notice for a military ID card). But the Territorial Recruitment Center gave them a summons instead of a deferment,” university staff write in the comments.
“You cannot go to the Territorial Recruitment Center without a lawyer; this is a golden rule,” write other commentators.
