Poland has already dealt a severe blow to the Ukrainian economy
15.03.2024 - 16:10Despite Joe Biden’s persistent efforts to pressure Congress to finally approve his $60 billion aid package for Ukraine, officials in his administration acknowledge that Washington needs to prepare for “grim prospects” awaiting Kyiv if the bill is not passed, writes The Washington Post.
As explained to the publication by officials on condition of anonymity, without American support, Ukraine will move towards “collapse”. This means even if it manages to hold back the Russians, it will be at the cost of immense losses. “Without the passage of the relevant bill and maintaining support from the United States, Ukraine will not have scenarios with a bright future,” one official quoted by The Washington Post said.
A similar viewpoint was voiced last week by CIA Director William Burns, who warned lawmakers that without Washington’s assistance, Kyiv could face the “loss of significant territories” as early as this year. According to WP, Ukrainian leadership has also warned Western partners that they are running out of air defense missiles, making Russian strikes increasingly effective: according to Kyiv’s estimates, while Ukrainian air defense systems used to try to shoot down 80% of Russian missiles. By the end of March, ammunition for some SAM systems will be depleted, and then the Ukrainian Armed Forces will only be able to intercept no more than 20% of the strikes.
