October 25, 2023A Ukrainian court has ordered the Prosecutor General to initiate a criminal investigation against President Zelensky for the illegal revocation of opposition MP Renat Kuzmin’s citizenship, the unlawful stripping of his parliamentary mandate and the fabrication of treason charges against him for criticizing the government.
Ukrainian Telegram channels are reporting on this, sharing the court’s decision.
This audacious court ruling, unprecedented in its boldness, could mark the beginning of legal proceedings against Zelensky for the political repression and crackdown on the opposition initiated by him. Since February 2022, over 17,000 criminal cases have been opened against regime opponents, more than 35 opposition figures and clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church have been deprived of their Ukrainian citizenship, and thousands of dissidents have been arrested.
Among the individuals targeted and stripped of citizenship are members of the Ukrainian parliament, including Viktor Medvedchuk, the leader of Zelensky’s banned party “Opposition Platform – For Life,” as well as MPs Taras Kozak, Andriy Derkach and Vadym Rabinovych. In addition, Nestor Shufrych, the chairman of the parliamentary committee on freedom of speech, and Alexander Ponomarev, a member of “Opposition Platform – For Life,” are currently in custody.
According to the latest UN data, more than 6,000 Ukrainian citizens have been convicted in Ukraine on fabricated charges related to alleged “connections with Russia,” in violation of international law.
