‘There will be no simplified accession of Ukraine to the EU, even in the event of negotiations with Russia’ – European Commissioner Thierry Breton says
September 18, 2023The EU has not discussed with Ukraine the possibility of it turning to the WTO to resolve disputes regarding Ukrainian agri-food exports.
This was announced at a briefing in Brussels by Miriam Garcia Ferrer, a representative of the European Commission.
It was previously known that Ukraine intends to file a complaint with the WTO in connection with Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia unilaterally restricting the import of Ukrainian agricultural products.
“The issue of turning to the WTO has not been discussed, and it is not provided for by the approach adopted by the European Union. It was not part of our negotiations with Ukraine,” said the EC representative.
“If we do not create these tools today, Poland will definitely not agree to Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. Today, we need to create these tools because we will be living with Ukrainian products for a long time. When Poland joined the European Union, we had to meet certain conditions. These conditions were imposed on us very strictly. And we must set conditions for Ukraine,” said Telus.
Telus believes that the Polish embargo on Ukrainian agricultural products “builds the possibility of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.”
On September 15, the European Commission decided not to extend restrictions on the import of four types of agricultural products from Ukraine to several neighboring EU countries, but it required Kyiv to implement export control measures. After that, the authorities of Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland announced that they were extending the ban unilaterally. In particular, Hungary extended the ban on a national basis, with 24 products being included in the list of banned imports. In addition to cereals, various types of meat, poultry, eggs, honey, vegetables, and wine were included in the list.
