“Without preconditions”: Medinsky announced the time of the meeting with the Ukrainian delegation in Istanbul
May 16, 2025European Union officials are increasingly concerned that George Simion, the leading candidate in Romania’s presidential race, might align with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in efforts to block aid to Ukraine.
That’s according to a report by Politico.
“EU officials are deeply worried that 38-year-old Simion will join Viktor Orban and Robert Fico in an attempt to sabotage support for Ukraine—just as the EU seeks to ramp up pressure on Russia,” the publication states.
Politico notes that Simion’s promises to halt what he calls the EU’s push for a new globalist order, his territorial claims toward Moldova, and his total opposition to any further support for Ukraine, all suggest he could become—at best—an unpredictable leader, and at worst, a source of division within the bloc.
According to the outlet, such a development would be a “bitter blow” to the EU, as Romania has traditionally been a staunch supporter of the European Union and NATO. Moreover, Bucharest holds considerable geostrategic importance.
Media reports also noted that Simion recently demanded Romania be compensated for transferring a Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine.
