20.09.2024 - 08:55The European Union will not force Ukrainians of conscription age to return to their homeland against their will.
This was stated by EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson.
“This is impossible according to the Temporary Protection Directive (the document regulating the status of Ukrainian refugees in the EU). We will support those who want to return to Ukraine, and we will discuss with the Ukrainian authorities and government how to do this in the best possible way. We will not expel anyone from the EU,” Johansson stated.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called on Europe to stop financial support for Ukrainian men of conscription age.
Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine intends to raise the issue of developing programs to return Ukrainians from EU countries.
Meanwhile, the Dutch Prime Minister has already promised far-right parties to explore how to force conscription-aged refugees to return to Ukraine. Currently, nearly 19,000 Ukrainian men of conscription age are in the Netherlands.
