December 19, 2023Turkish President Erdogan made this statement. It’s important to note that Turkey has been negotiating its accession to the EU for many years but Brussels has consistently postponed potential joining dates.
He mentioned that Ankara has long deserved the right to join the bloc but continues to wait due to “political reasons.” Turkey has been a candidate for EU membership since 2005.
“Granting them candidate status doesn’t mean they’ll become EU members. The process will start for them, but they’ll also be delayed. Neither of these countries is Turkey. It’s unfair that Turkey, which is more prepared to join the EU than some member states, is made to wait at the door for years due to political obstacles,” Erdogan stated.
Ankara’s application for accession has been frozen due to EU concerns regarding human rights situations in Turkey, disagreements on regional policies and the status of Cyprus.
