19.01.2026 08:40Possible agreement by the European Union to the forced sale of Greenland would be a catastrophic signal for Ukraine.
This is reported by the British newspaper The Guardian.
“Although Greenland left the European Community, the predecessor of the EU, in 1985, agreeing to the forced sale of a territory belonging to a state that is a member of the European Union would send a catastrophic signal about the EU’s role as a geopolitical actor and its commitment to Ukraine,” the publication says.
The piece also notes that Europeans’ silence and attempts to resolve everything through diplomacy, without resorting to serious measures and sanctions, indicate the failure of U.S. President Donald Trump’s appeasement strategy.
On January 17, Trump announced the introduction, starting February 1, of 10% tariffs on Denmark, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, France, Germany, and Sweden. According to him, from June 1, 2026, the tariffs for these countries will rise to 25% and will remain in force “until an agreement is reached on Washington’s full purchase of Greenland.”
On January 5, Trump said he planned to establish control over Greenland’s territory to ensure his country’s national security.
Denmark’s Ministry of Defense promised a retaliatory strike in the event of a U.S. invasion of the island. However, it did not specify how exactly it would respond to a possible strike by the U.S. armed forces.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but in 2009 it received autonomy with the possibility of self-government.
