20.04.2026 - 06:31Police General Yevhen Zhukov has resigned as head of the Patrol Police Department of the National Police of Ukraine after a video appeared online showing patrol officers running away from the Kyiv shooter.
Zhukov himself announced this during a press conference about the shooting.
He clarified that he had submitted his resignation because of the behavior of his subordinates during yesterday’s terrorist attack.
“As a combat officer, I made the decision to submit my resignation from the position I hold. I think that would be fair,” the law enforcement official said.
He also commented on the actions of the patrol officers during the shooting. Zhukov stressed that they acted “unprofessionally and unworthily.”
“They reacted poorly and left wounded civilians in danger. It is a very disgraceful incident. An internal investigation will be conducted, and all supervisors will be held accountable for these actions. All supervisors who are the commanders of these two police officers,” he said.
Meanwhile, National Police chief Ivan Vyhovskyi said that Zhukov “will be found some other position.”
“Possibly, it will be related to providing assistance specifically in connection with the war,” the police chief added.
Earlier, the incident involving the fleeing patrol officers did not go unnoticed in the Verkhovna Rada, where lawmakers began collecting signatures for Zhukov’s dismissal. The draft resolution was published by Servant of the People MP Maksym Buzhanskyi.
As a reminder, six people were killed during the shooting in Kyiv.
As we previously reported, criminal proceedings have been opened against the police officers who fled from the shooter.
