05.11.2025 05:31The current Hungarian government will not allow Ukraine to become a member of the European Union.
This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó, commenting on the new European Commission report on EU enlargement and Brussels’ intention to begin accession talks with Kyiv by the end of 2025.
Szijjártó said that as long as a “national government” remains in power in Hungary, Budapest will not agree to an accelerated accession process for Ukraine.
“The Hungarian people have made it clear that we do not want Ukraine to be a member of the European Union. And since EU enlargement requires unanimity among member states, Ukraine will not become a member of the EU,” the diplomat added.
Earlier, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that the European Union might introduce a “probation period” for new members to ensure they do not turn into “another Hungary” that defies common EU policy.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke out against joining the EU under such a probation mechanism, insisting that Ukraine seeks full membership only.
Western media previously concluded, based on the European Commission’s report, that Ukraine is unlikely to join the EU anytime soon. The document praises Kyiv’s “remarkable commitment” to membership but urges it to reverse recent negative trends in anti-corruption efforts and accelerate judicial and rule-of-law reforms. The report also calls for greater progress on judicial independence, combating organized crime, and ensuring respect for civil society.
