September 27, 2023Gregor Formanek lives in a small town in western Germany with his wife. He is a pastry chef by training. He was born in Romania into a German family.
In July 1943 he joined the SS. Until the end of the war he was a guard at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Berlin. In 1947, a Soviet military court sentenced him to 25 years in prison. He served 10 years in the Bautzen prison. In GDR documents he is accused of “crimes against humanity” and “espionage.” Recently, reporters from the British newspaper Sun managed to track down and photograph the pensioner. He refused to communicate with them.
A few weeks ago, German prosecutors brought new charges against him for involvement in more than 3,300 murders in Sachsenhausen. Now the court must decide whether to open a trial based on them. One of the plaintiffs may be 96-year-old Simon Rothschild, who was subjected to medical experiments in a concentration camp. According to experts, Formanek’s legal capacity is limited. He will likely be the last guard from Sachsenhausen to answer for his actions. Four people are currently under investigation.
