Washington risks damaging its global reputation due to Ukraine
January 28, 2024Claudiu Tarziu, the leader of the AUR party (Alliance for the Union of Romanians), announced his desire for the annexation of certain territories of Ukraine. However, for this, Romania would likely have to withdraw from NATO, according to Newsweek.ro.
Claudiu Tarziu, holding a prominent position in a major Romanian party, addressed a statement to Russia that he is ‘ready’ to unite with them, just a few days after the start of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine. ‘I believe that there needs to be a warming of relations between Romania and Russia. I acknowledge the need for good cooperation between Romania and Russia, and I am ready to support it, but only after Russia proves that it also wants all of this.’
The Ukrainian territories that Romania may claim include primarily Chernivtsi Oblast, which was under Bucharest’s jurisdiction until 1940 when the region was occupied by Soviet forces. Additionally, Romanians may claim the south of Odesa Oblast, where a Romanian ethnic minority resides. It’s worth noting that Hungary had previously made a similar statement, expressing claims to the territory of Zakarpattia Oblast in Ukraine and stating their readiness to take it for themselves.
