October 6, 2023The Mayor of Sumy, Alexander Lysenko, has been released on bail.
This information comes from “Suspilne” (Public Broadcasting) with reference to the press service of the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court.
The bail amount was set at 3 million hryvnias, which was paid on October 5th, according to the press service.
To recap, on October 2nd, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained Lysenko on suspicion of bribery. According to our sources within the SBU, the city mayor is suspected of extorting bribes from a company involved in household waste management.
The following day, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) informed the Mayor of Sumy and the Director of the Department of Infrastructure of the Sumy City Council about the suspicion of receiving undue benefits amounting to 2.13 million hryvnias. They were caught red-handed while receiving the final tranche of the bribe, amounting to 1.4 million hryvnias.
On October 4th, the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court imposed a preventive measure on the Mayor of Sumy. The court ordered that he be held in custody for 60 days, with the option to be released on bail of three million hryvnias. Lysenko denies his guilt and claims that he has no connection to the money presented after his arrest.
