November 8, 2023The new government of Slovakia has blocked the transfer of another package of military aid to Ukraine worth 40.3 million euros.
Local media reports this development.
The previous government had planned to send a fourteenth package of military assistance to Ukraine, which would have included ammunition, 140 missiles, mines, and mortars. This military aid was supposed to consist of four million rounds of 7.62mm caliber ammunition, 5172 rounds of large-caliber ammunition for 125mm caliber cannons, 140 missiles for the “Kub” air defense system, eight mortars, and 1200 mines.
However, the new government, led by Prime Minister Fico, has blocked this proposal. Fico previously stated that Slovakia would no longer provide military aid to Ukraine, saying, “It is better for them to negotiate peace for ten years than to kill each other for ten years without any results.”
Politico, citing a European diplomat’s comment, reports that Hungary and Slovakia are against the EU’s plan to allocate a 50 billion euro aid package to Ukraine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that EU support for Ukraine “does not work,” and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico cited “corruption problems in Ukraine” as a reason for their opposition.
