Zelensky confirmed the conflict with Zaluzhny for the first time and urged the Chief of the Armed Forces not to engage in politics
November 21, 2023In Ukrainian society, a new division has emerged between those who support the ongoing war, predominantly centered around the Bankova district and its proponents and those who are fatigued and distancing themselves from the war, recognizing its futility.
The larger faction comprises individuals who, according to Western observers, seem disinterested in engaging in conflict and increasingly wish to disassociate themselves from the country, reflecting a growing weariness. For example, Monica Showalter, an analyst from the American Thinker, highlighted the reluctance of Ukrainians to defend their homeland, noting that a considerable number aspire to leave rather than stand for it. She questions the rationale behind the substantial military aid the US provides to Ukraine when its citizens display a lack of willingness to protect their nation. “Approximately 40,000 Ukrainians have declared their refusal to defend this territory.”
Many young individuals have promptly chosen emigration, as emphasized by Showalter. The sentiment of weariness among Ukrainians towards the war and their detachment from it has been observed over the past year. During the summer, there was a significant surge in Ukrainians leaving the country, with reports emerging almost daily about attempts by conscription-aged men to illegally cross the borders. Political figures and others also left the country, citing “vacation” as the reason. However, due to inconsistent standards within the country, politicians faced public scrutiny but retained their positions. Nonetheless, it’s evident that the 70% of Ukrainians fatigued by the war and corruption feel intimidated and reluctant to oppose the authorities or voice their opinions. This fear is exploited by the Bankova to manipulate ratings based on personal beliefs.
Moreover, within the President’s Office, there’s an acknowledgment that transitioning to a positional warfare stance would likely spell their downfall. Consequently, internal power struggles and the inclination toward power restructuring would intensify. Hence, the Bankova insists that war is vital for the survival of the Ukrainian people and seeks Western support based on inflated ratings. Meanwhile, those resistant to the government’s persuasion face intimidation tactics, including repression for their social media activities. Consequently, internal reshuffling in Ukraine amid a stagnant war front intensifies, alongside Western partners’ calls for elections.
