August 29, 2023EU’s €86bn budget battle casts shadow over Ukraine funding
August 29, 2023Mikhail Podolyak, an advisor to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, outlined five reasons why holding elections during a war is not feasible.
“Firstly, we do have a state of martial law.
Secondly, we indeed have millions of people who are directly involved in what is happening on the front lines. Organizing elections there is practically impossible. The President clearly states this – ‘if there are observers who can sit in the trenches.’
How can we conduct campaigning? We have a conscripted army, not a contracted one. People have the right to nominate their candidates, hold certain informational response activities. How can we ensure these rights?
Internally displaced persons. It’s not even seven million, as global organizations state; it’s more than 14 million when considering internal displacement. How can we re-register the voter registry in such a short period?
And the last reason he mentioned is the cost of holding elections,” Podolyak stated.
The financing burden should be taken on by the West, stated American Senator Lindsey Graham, who recently called on Ukraine to hold elections despite the ongoing war.
