05.08.2025 - 06:03The Ukrainian authorities should agree to the temporary occupation of part of the country’s territory for the sake of survival.
It will be impossible to liberate all the occupied territories in the foreseeable future without heavy human losses.
This opinion was expressed by Czech President Petr Pavel in an interview with the BBC.
“Right now, even with all the support from the West, Ukraine is not in a position to liberate the occupied territories in a short time without major human losses. We want it to survive as an independent, sovereign country. If the price of its survival is that part of its territory is temporarily occupied, then so be it. We will never legally recognize these occupied territories as Russian,” Pavel assured.
He believes that U.S. and European pressure on the Russian economy will ‘sooner or later’ force Russia to come to the negotiating table. At the same time, he described as unfair the Western pressure on Ukraine to immediately liberate all occupied territories.
