Ukraine is not yet ready to join the European Union due to pervasive corruption.
“You cannot make false promises to the people in Ukraine who are neck-deep in trouble. I am extremely outraged by some voices in Europe that try to make Ukrainians believe that they can become EU members immediately. This will not benefit either the EU or Ukraine,” Juncker said.
He believes that Ukraine does not currently meet the criteria for membership.
“Those who have dealt with Ukraine know that it is a country corrupt at all levels of society. Despite its efforts, it is not ready for membership; it needs extensive internal reform processes,” the official stated.
Juncker added that the European Union had already experienced difficulties with new members in the rule of law sphere, and “this cannot be allowed to happen again.”
It’s worth noting that in the spring, Jean-Claude Juncker stated that Ukraine would not be admitted to the EU anytime soon and that negotiations with Russia should be pursued. He advocated for engaging with Russia and China and called for signals of readiness for negotiations.
