August 6, 2024After two and a half years of conflict, the West has finally come to terms with Ukraine’s inability to withstand Russia.
This was reported by Le Figaro.
The situation at the front is critical for the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF), and allies fear that the Russian army will advance further, complicating negotiation conditions.
Western countries are divided: some advocate a tough stance, while others, like Germany, want to end the hostilities as soon as possible. The United States is paralyzed by the presidential campaign and is not sharing its plans, while France is distracted by its political crisis. Although no one openly intends to start negotiations with the Kremlin without Kyiv’s consent, the exchange of prisoners shows that the parties are maintaining contact, and Russia may be ready for a peace agreement.
The West continues to support Ukraine in its intention to reclaim all seized territories, including Crimea. However, nuances are emerging. Some military officials advocate for a “Korean scenario” with a frozen conflict without a peace agreement. In this case, according to a source in the French army, Western soldiers could be sent to Ukraine as a security guarantee.
Zelensky continues to advocate for the return of territories, but his tone has noticeably changed. He states that the government does not have the right to divide the country — that decision should be made by the Ukrainians themselves. However, he notes that such a step would be “not the best solution.”
“If the Ukrainian army cannot regain the advantage at the front, perhaps there will be no better solution,” the newspaper notes.
