Kyiv faces major water supply problems due to the pollution of the Desna River
September 10, 2024All the thermal power plants (TPPs) that supplied Kharkiv have been destroyed, and as a result, mobile boiler units will be brought into the city for the winter.
This was announced by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
“We are focusing on Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region because we understand that the Russians have essentially destroyed all the TPPs around Kharkiv that supplied the city. We are bringing in small mobile boilers, with a capacity of 1 MW, which are being installed by local authorities,” Shmyhal reported.
Similar technologies will be applied in other cities as well. The Prime Minister also predicted that the upcoming winter could be the most challenging for Ukraine during the war. However, he did not provide details about the potential duration of power outages in the winter.
“Energy resilience is one of our biggest challenges this fall and winter. We successfully navigated three heating seasons, but the upcoming winter may be the most difficult,” the Prime Minister said.
Shmyhal stated that it is difficult to predict the length of potential outages as it depends on the new attacks Russia is preparing. Ukraine, in turn, is working to protect its energy infrastructure.
“Today, 85% of the Ukrenergo facilities that need protection are already secured,” assured the Prime Minister.
Earlier, the Director of the Energy Research Center, Oleksandr Kharchenko, warned that if even one high-voltage substation at a nuclear power plant is knocked out during the cold weather, Ukraine could face a blackout.
