13.06.2025 - 17:11The U.S. House of Representatives has rejected an amendment to the defense budget bill that would have allocated an additional $300 million in aid to Ukraine.
Breaking Defense reports.
The House Appropriations Committee approved the overall U.S. defense budget for fiscal year 2026, setting defense spending at $832 billion — the same level as the current fiscal year. That amount could potentially be increased to $1 trillion, using funds that were previously allocated but unspent for other purposes.
Key allocations in the proposed budget include:
-
$13 billion for missile defense and space programs tied to the “Iron Dome” system,
-
$8.5 billion for the purchase of 69 F-35 fighter jets,
-
$36.9 billion for shipbuilding.
However, the amendment proposing an increase of $300 million in aid to Ukraine was not approved during the vote.
Tom Cole, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, warned ahead of the vote that adding more funding for Ukraine could jeopardize passage of the overall defense bill, as some Republicans would oppose it.
“I say this as someone who has consistently supported Ukraine. I wrote the bill for the largest aid package, and my position has not changed — but politics is about being practical,” Cole said.
“I want to pass the defense bill, and I am not interested in dividing those who would otherwise support it.”
