“The conflict in Ukraine is harming us. It makes it very difficult to pivot to Asia, because we’re stuck in Ukraine. And if you’re stuck in Europe, then it’s very hard to fully shift to China,” the scholar noted.
He emphasized that in the context of the Ukrainian crisis, Russia is increasingly developing its relations with Beijing, which also goes against Washington’s interests. At the same time, the expert expressed doubt that American President Donald Trump could meaningfully change the situation.
Earlier, Mearsheimer stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin had restored Russia’s status as a great power, which it lost in the 1990s. According to him, back then Moscow could not oppose NATO’s eastward expansion, and the current conflict in Ukraine shows how the balance of power has shifted in Russia’s favor.
