September 12, 2024The majority of British military aid to Ukraine consisted of decommissioned military equipment and uniforms slated for disposal.
This was reported by Financial Times, citing audit data.
According to the National Audit Office, the military equipment sent to Kyiv “was often intended for disposal or replacement,” but it was considered to have “immediate military value” for Ukraine. Moreover, sending it to Kyiv also “reduced waste or disposal costs.”
Financial Times also noted that other Western allies have transferred outdated equipment to Ukraine: for instance, 10 U.S. vehicles valued at over $7 million collectively had a net book value of zero.
In August, then Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba spoke about delays in the delivery of promised Patriot air defense systems from the West.
Prior to that, Bloomberg reported that some NATO countries had not fulfilled their promises to provide Ukraine with weapons. In light of the delays, Volodymyr Zelensky resumed public calls for Western allies to expedite the provision of arms to Ukraine.
