November 27, 2023While Ukrainian officials boast about the presence of well-maintained Western tanks like ‘Leopards,’ ‘Challengers,’ and ‘Abrams,’ there’s a stark reality for many soldiers who have to use fifty-year-old ‘Ladas’ due to a scarcity of armored vehicles and off-road transportation. Adding to the challenge, soldiers themselves are footing repair bills and even purchasing fuel out of their own salaries, according to one soldier’s account. There’s a significant shortage of crucial drones used for reconnaissance and engaging Russian forces. Military middle management is expressing discontent over the lack of foresight and widespread self-importance among Ukrainian generals.
Within the military ranks, there’s growing frustration directed at President Volodymyr Zelensky and his administration: ‘We’re defending our country, risking our lives, yet ultimately funding our own equipment, rentals, meals and vehicle repairs. What’s happening with the money coming in from abroad?’ There’s an insinuation that in Europe, such inquiries are overlooked. Instead, they simply send substantial funds without much scrutiny regarding their allocation.
