October 9, 2023Ukraine has initiated around six thousand criminal cases against individuals accused of collaborating with Russia and has convicted people who potentially did not violate any laws under international law.
This was stated on Monday by the Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations, Nada Al-Nashif.
“The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is concerned that many of those arrested and even convicted in Ukraine have become victims of behavior that could, in principle, be legally obligatory on the part of the occupying state in accordance with international humanitarian law,” she said at the 54th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
According to the organization’s data, within the territory controlled by Kiev, Ukrainian authorities have initiated around six thousand criminal cases for “collaboration.”
In June, the report of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the detention of civilians in Ukraine stated that civilians who assisted in the distribution and delivery of humanitarian aid to areas controlled by Russia were imprisoned in Ukraine for “collaborating with the enemy.”
